Modelling training at IAAS

I conducted the DSSAT workshop training with assistance from the two formally-trained staff of the institute, Dr. N. R. Devkota and Mr. L.P Amgain, for practical classes. Dr. Devkota was trained by me on DSSAT maize and pasture modelling for 2 months in 2005 and Amgain on DSSAT rice and wheat modelling for 3 months in 2004, both at CSIRO, Griffith, with funds from the ATSE Crawford Fund International, Australia. The workshop training was given to eight academic staff and two post-graduate students of IAAS, and to two researchers of the Nepal Agricultural Research Council (NARC). The training focused on DSSAT wheat, maize and soybean models embedded within DSSAT-CSM v. 4.0, and emphasized on the practical aspects of the modelling, with some background information/lectures on principles of modelling. My travel to Nepal to conduct the training was also funded by the ATSE Crawford Fund. The training workshop was inaugurated by the Dean of the institute, who also invited all participants and some senior members of the institute to a welcome dinner. The training was formally closed by the Asst. Dean of the institute who distributed certificates provided by the ATSE Crawford Fund International to all the participants of the training. A closing dinner was arranged on behalf of Crawford Fund and CSIRO. All the participants were highly enthusiastic about the training and were very eager to learn, practice, and integrate crop modelling in their teaching and research activities. The training workshop has been highly cost-effective as no other costs were involved except my air-fare to travel to Nepal and the local expenses (photocopying, printing, and my accommodation and food, etc.) which were quite minimal, and has made great impacts towards the attitudes of the participants and the institute in terms of integrating simulation modelling in teaching an research. A separate report will be sent to the Crawford Fund regarding the conduct and usefulness of this training. A follow-up workshop is recommended to study the impacts of this training.
